The ASTM A269 specification covers nominal-wall-thickness, seamless and welded austenitic steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. Upon completion, all material shall:

  • shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition.
  • conform to the chemical composition requirements.
  • different mechanical test requirements that includes, flaring test, flange test, hardness test, and reverse flattening test are presented.
  • shall be subjected to the non-destructive electric test or the hydrostatic test

Corrosion Resistance of 316L Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

excellent in a range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media - generally more resistant than 304. Subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking above about 600C. Considered resistant to potable water with up to about 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at 600C.

316L is usually regarded as the standard €œmarine grade stainless steel", but it is not resistant to warm sea water. In many marine environments 316L does exhibit surface corrosion, usually visible as brown staining. This is particularly associated with crevices and rough surface finish.

Heat Treatment of ASTM A269 316L Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes and Tubes

Solution Treatment (Annealing) - Heat to 1010-11200C and cool rapidly. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
